STITCH STORIES: A Toy for the Sharing Economy
Project Description
Stitch Stories is my solution to the design challenge of creating a toy that could fall into the sharing economy. This toy is a recording device for collaborative storytelling, where one child can record one part of a story, and another child can then continue the story; stitching together a creative and elaborate story made by kids around the world. After the story is finished, the toy will play back the full story for the child.
This project was based around design thinking; the end result was solely a concept proposal.

Design Process
Research
The process was the most integral part of coming to a final conclusion for a toy. I was able to explore disruptive innovation methods such as C-K Mapping, Divergent Scenario Mapping, and Perspective Shift.
C-K Map & Divergent Scenario Mapping:
Perspective Shift:
The Perspective Shift exercise allowed me to explore concepts that fit in particular categories of our society. My concept for the "market world" is what inspired my final outcome.
Concept Exploration
To further develop the idea of a 'walkie-talkie' like toy, I explored forms that would easily fit into the palm of a persons hand. After exploring options, I decided on the name 'Stitch Stories," so I wanted the toy to look like a monster that had been stitched together will different textures and forms which led me to the final design.
Final Design Solution
Design Solution
The sharing economy is defined as an economic system where there is exchange of goods or services, and more broadly it facilitates shared interactions. Stitch Stories creates a way for a young child to participate in this sort of economy. This toy is a recording device for collaborative storytelling, where one child can record one part of a story, and another child can then continue the story; stitching together a creative and elaborate story made by kids around the world. After the story is finished, the toy will play back the full story for the child. In this way, Stitch Stories fills the gap for a toy that both encourages collaborative play through shared interactions, while also inspiring kids to share their own creative ideas and imaginations.
